Why Microcement Should Be Applied by Professionals, Not DIY
Microcement is often admired for its calm, seamless and mineral texture. In photos, it may look simple: a smooth continuous surface across floors, bathrooms, walls or furniture.
In reality, microcement is not a paint, not ordinary cement, and not a one-layer decorative coating. It is a complete surface system. A refined result depends on material selection, substrate assessment, layered application, detailing, sealing and aftercare.
This is why Semiforêt does not recommend casual DIY application, especially for floors, wet areas, commercial projects or large continuous surfaces.
Microcement is a technical surface system.
Semiforêt describes its microcement as a complete surface system, not a single coating layer. The system is built around substrate preparation, layered application, reinforcement logic, controlled texture and sealed surface protection.Professional workmanship is essential.
The final surface depends on how each layer is prepared, applied, dried, sanded and sealed. The texture should be seen in person whenever possible.
Microcement has a warm, mineral, tactile quality that photographs cannot fully communicate.
Microcement Looks Simple, But the System Is Not Simple
A finished microcement surface can look quiet and effortless. That is part of its appeal. It creates a continuous architectural finish with fewer visual interruptions than tiles, cement screed or ordinary wall coatings. Semiforêt positions its system for clients who want better visual continuity than traditional tiles, cement screed or ordinary wall coatings.
But the simplicity of the final look should not be mistaken for a simple application process.
A proper microcement system may involve substrate preparation, primer, reinforcement where required, base coats, finish coats, sanding, colour control, sealer and protective topcoat. Each layer affects the next. Poor preparation can lead to weak bonding. Incorrect drying control can affect texture. Weak sealing can reduce surface performance in daily use.
This is why microcement is often described internally as “three parts material, seven parts workmanship.” The product matters, but the applicator’s technical judgement is just as important.
Why DIY Microcement Is Risky
Microcement is thin, but it is not forgiving.
A DIY approach may seem attractive for small projects, but the common risks include uneven texture, visible roller or trowel marks, poor edge detailing, peeling, bubbling, surface staining, weak sealing or inconsistent colour movement.
The greater risk is that many problems do not appear immediately. They may show after daily use, cleaning, moisture exposure or substrate movement.
This is especially important for:
bathrooms and wet zones
floors with heavy daily foot traffic
commercial spaces
large seamless surfaces
stairs, corners and edges
tile overlay projects
substrates with cracks, hollow areas or moisture concerns
Semiforêt’s own FAQ notes that cracking is unlikely when the system is applied on a suitable and properly prepared substrate, but final performance still depends on substrate condition, detailing and correct system application.
That is the key point: microcement performance is not only about the product. It is about whether the product is applied under the right conditions, by the right team, with the right system.
Why Showroom Viewing Matters
Microcement should be seen in person whenever possible.
Photos can show colour direction, but they rarely capture the full surface character: the soft mineral movement, hand-applied depth, tactile warmth, light reflection, matte level and subtle variation between samples.
For homeowners, designers and commercial clients, visiting a showroom can help clarify:
whether the texture feels too smooth or too raw
whether the colour appears warmer or cooler under real lighting
whether the finish suits floors, walls, bathrooms or furniture
whether a quieter or more expressive surface is preferred
how microcement compares with tiles, paint, stone or cement screed
This matters because microcement is not only a material decision. It is a spatial decision.
Semiforêt’s Technical Network
Semiforêt is building its microcement work around trained technical teams, showrooms and partner support.
The current partner direction includes China, Singapore and Dubai, with Malaysia as an upcoming business region. The global partner material also invites partners from wider regions, including markets that are not yet fully covered, and highlights cooperation around product knowledge, technical training, showroom display, project support and long-term regional development.
For regions where Semiforêt does not yet have a local application team, self-DIY is not the preferred route. A better approach is to work with an experienced local applicator who already understands decorative cementitious finishes, substrate preparation and sealed surface systems.
Where a capable local team is available, Semiforêt can support through material supply and remote technical guidance, depending on the project scope and region. For markets such as Australia, Vietnam and other areas where local operations may not yet be established, professional partnership is welcome.
Seamless Does Not Mean Careless
Many clients choose microcement because they want a seamless look. Compared with tiles, microcement can reduce grout lines and create a more continuous visual surface.
However, seamless does not mean no technical judgement is needed.
Existing movement joints, substrate cracks, hollow tiles, moisture issues, waterproofing details and transitions should still be reviewed before application. In some areas, microcement can create a visually continuous finish without tile grout lines. But where the building or substrate requires movement management, the detail should be assessed by a trained team.
A professional applicator does not only ask, “What colour do you want?” They ask, “What is the existing surface, where is the risk, and what system is appropriate?”
Practical Checklist Before Contacting Semiforêt
Before requesting microcement advice, prepare:
project location and country
floor plan or marked-up area
site photos and close-ups of the existing surface
approximate area size
whether the surface is floor, wall, bathroom, outdoor, furniture or commercial
current substrate condition
visible cracks, hollow tiles, moisture marks or uneven areas
preferred colour, texture and finish reference
whether you need supply only, application, training or partnership support
This allows the team to advise whether the project should be handled by a Semiforêt technical team, a trained local partner, or an experienced local applicator with remote support.
Semiforêt Perspective
Microcement is a material that needs to be touched, viewed and applied correctly.
Its beauty lies in restraint: a soft mineral surface, continuous lines and a warmer feel than ordinary cement. But that beauty comes from a disciplined system. Substrate preparation, application sequence, layer control, sealing and aftercare all affect the final result.
For clients in China, Singapore, Dubai and upcoming Semiforêt regions such as Malaysia, visiting a showroom or speaking with the technical team is the best first step. For markets not yet covered, Semiforêt welcomes professional partners and experienced applicators who want to develop the microcement category responsibly.
Microcement is not a product to rush into DIY. It is a surface system worth seeing in person and applying properly.

FAQ
-
Semiforêt does not recommend casual DIY application, especially for floors, bathrooms, commercial areas or large seamless surfaces. Microcement requires substrate assessment, layer control, sealing and correct detailing.
-
If your region is not yet covered, the better option is to work with an experienced local applicator. Where appropriate, Semiforêt may provide material supply and remote technical guidance, depending on the project and local capability.
-
Based on the current direction, Semiforêt is active across China, Singapore and Dubai, with Malaysia as an upcoming business region. The brand also welcomes partners from wider international markets.
-
Microcement has a tactile mineral quality that is difficult to judge from photos alone. A showroom visit helps you compare texture, colour movement, matte level and how the surface responds to real lighting.
-
Not always. Microcement can create a seamless visual effect, but existing movement joints, unstable substrates, cracks and wet-area details should still be assessed before confirming the final design.
