Existing homes rarely begin with a blank substrate. Tiles may be stable or hollow. Cracks may be superficial or linked to movement. Previous finishes may be suitable, weak or incompatible.

Microcement renovation therefore begins with assessment rather than appearance. The aim is to understand the existing base before defining the new surface system.

Microcement can be useful in renovation because selected existing surfaces may sometimes remain in place. Suitability depends on condition, stability, compatibility and the preparation required.

Stable Existing Tiles

Existing tiles that remain stable and properly bonded may sometimes be considered as part of the renovation substrate, subject to site assessment.

Screed or Mineral Base

Existing cementitious substrates may be considered when sufficiently cured, stable and suitable for the specified preparation system.

05 / OVERLAY OR REMOVAL

Overlay Is an Option.
Not a Rule.

Overlay may be considered when

  • Existing tiles remain sufficiently well bonded.
  • The substrate is stable enough for the specified system.
  • Major cracking or movement is not identified.
  • Transitions and finished levels can be resolved.
  • Project detailing allows the proposed build-up.

Repair or removal may be required when

  • Tiles are hollow, loose or unstable.
  • Existing cracks require remedial treatment.
  • Movement is evident in the substrate.
  • Existing layers are weak or incompatible.
  • Unresolved moisture or other site conditions are present.

Final recommendations should follow project-specific assessment. Microcement should not be treated as a method for concealing unresolved substrate defects.

These materials solve different renovation needs. The decision should consider existing conditions, desired appearance, detailing and the level of intervention required rather than treating one material as universally superior.

Microcement

A thin decorative surface system selected for a continuous mineral character and renovation over suitable prepared substrates.

Tiles

A modular surface solution with defined joints and established installation methods.

Cement Screed

A cementitious finish with a different material build-up and visual character. Suitability depends on the intended application and construction method.

Hollow or poorly bonded tiles may compromise the suitability of an overlay approach and should be identified before application.

Existing Cracks

Level Transitions

Existing build-up, door thresholds and adjoining materials should be considered before finalising the surface system.

Moisture & Condition

Unresolved moisture or other underlying conditions should be addressed before decorative finishing.

Can microcement be applied over existing tiles?

In selected projects, yes. Stable and properly bonded existing tiles may sometimes be considered as part of the substrate, subject to assessment and suitable preparation.

Do I always need to hack existing tiles?

No. Removal is not automatically required. Whether an overlay approach is suitable depends on existing tile adhesion, substrate stability, cracks, movement, transitions and project-specific conditions.

What happens if my tiles are hollow?

Hollow or unstable areas should be identified before application. Remedial work, partial removal or another preparation approach may be required depending on the condition.

Can microcement repair structural cracks?

No. Microcement is a decorative surface system and should not be treated as a structural repair solution. Existing cracks and substrate movement should be assessed first.

Can microcement be used for HDB renovation?

It may be considered for selected HDB renovation projects. Suitability depends on the existing substrate, application area, renovation scope and site conditions.

Is microcement suitable for an existing bathroom?

It may be suitable, but bathroom renovation also requires consideration of substrate condition, waterproofing requirements, wet-area detailing and the specified protective finish.

How much does microcement renovation cost in Singapore?
